What is the Manning Forestry Research Fund?

Manning Diversified Forest Products Ltd. (MDFP Ltd.) is located near the Town of Manning, (600km northwest of Edmonton, Alberta), produces dimensional softwood lumber and specialty products for domestic, U.S. and Pacific Rim customers.  The Manning Forestry Research Fund (MFRF) was established under the terms of a coniferous timber agreement signed with the province in 1993 and became fully operational during 1994/95.  In 2002, MDFP Ltd. received a Forest Management Agreement (FMA) from the Provincial Government.  Now the members, drawn from the community, provincial and regional governments, oversee a $1.00 per cubic metre harvested contribution to the MFRF.  This amounts to approximately $250,000 per year available to support research which is relevant to Alberta’s boreal forest region.  We are currently supporting 11 different research projects, worth approximately $250,000.

A Few Facts…

Since its inception in 1995, the Manning Forestry Research Fund has contributed $6.15 million for research projects in Alberta.

MDFP Ltd. was the first company in Alberta to tie its annual contribution for forest and wildlife research directly to ongoing operations. (i.e. a per cubic metre contribution based on harvest activity).

A total of 132 research projects have been supported to date.  Organizations receiving support include: The University of Alberta, Alberta Research Council, Canadian Forest Service, Alberta Environment, North Peace Applied Research Association, Envirothon, Boreal Research Institute, and the Alberta Conservation Association.
