Forest
Explorers '99 a Hit!
December 1999

The sequel is seldom as good as the original so, armed with
a healthy dose of fear, work went forward with Forest Explorers
99 in hopes that it would indeed surpass its debut performance
in 1997. On October 28th and 29th (Battle River Agriculture
Hall – Manning) we welcomed over 525 visitors to a wide
selection of displays highlighting the many links we share
with the boreal forest in N.W. Alberta. The Boreal Wood Centre
once again served as an excellent host for this community research
show. Well done Hugh Seaton, Norma Tindall, and each of our
presenters, on the best show to-date.
The most valuable aspect of this event, is that the researchers
and students find some common ground on a variety of research
projects. It takes a special kind of skill to explain an in
depth grizzly bear project in such a way that both a 12 year
old student or a 55 year old store owner can appreciate what
you are setting out to achieve. Students attending Forest Explorers
received rare first hand exposure to the excitement and work
involved in conducting forest research in Alberta.
These visitors were intrigued with the two caribou antlers
which locked together. Neither animal walked away from that
fight long ago. (Battle River Museum Display)
Students gather round to examine tree growth rings, and discuss
some of the genetic characteristics of Alberta's boreal forest. |
